City College Norwich held its 10th annual Further Education Awards recently and we were very proud that not just one but two of the 16 award winners were from MINT!
Laura Watson received the award for “Overcoming barriers to success in Pre-Employment training”. Laura suffered from very high anxiety and was low in confidence, but she was determined to overcome this and achieve paid work. She attended our Care Pre-Employment project in March of this year which included one workshop each week at MINT and a work placement in a Norse care home, Dell Rose Court in Norwich. The workshops were a major hurdle for Laura and there were times that she admitted she wanted to just run but she persevered and shone in every session through her contribution and commitment. Laura was a natural in her work placement from the outset and her manager immediately saw her potential through the way she engaged with the tenants and staff. Laura overcame her anxiety over the first few shifts with help and support from her job coach and her manager and she flourished at Dell Rose Court always showing enthusiasm and a desire to learn and grow. Laura applied for a paid opportunity at Dell Rose Court which she was successful in achieving – Laura has been employed at Dell Rose Court since June and the tenants are thrilled she has stayed and she has become an integral part of the team. Laura should be extremely proud of what she has achieved in a short space of time and everyone at Mint wishes her all the best for the future.
Then Nathan Courtney, who finished college in June this year, was given the “Students’ Union Award for Enhancing the Student Experience.” Nathan attended City College for 2 years and in that time was felt to have made a great contribution to the student experience as a whole by setting up an Anime club through the Student Union. He taught students how to draw anime and gave them tips on creating it. Nathan is now attending MINT to get support looking for work.
Congratulations to both Laura and Nathan, and to all the other award winners that night.
